Cocopeat, as it is called, is typically sold in compressed one-pound blocks. When you place a block of it in a gallon of water for 20 minutes, you end up with nine quarts of weed-free organic material that's a great substitute for peat. Another nifty coconut product is a biscuit-size wafer that combines with about a cup of water to produce enough material to fill a four-inch pot.

Coco moss peat is an ecologically sound alternative to peat. The great popularity of peat has raised fears that the demand may outstrip the supply. Because peat bogs provide a natural habitat for diverse plant and animal life, important natural environments may be threatened as a consequence of excessive peat harvesting.

The production of peat by "Record" Ltd. from the deposit of Morochno in Dubrovitsky region, Ukraine, is a good example of ecologically oriented approach to development of the peat lands. It is based on the reasonable industrial policy worked out in agreement with the wild life conservation strategy on the one hand, and production of peat meeting the high quality standards on the other, which was acknowledged by the laboratories of Ukraine, Canada and Germany.
