Sphagnum peat moss is a bog moss which is collected and composted. Most peat moss is composed primarily of sphagnum moss. Sphagnum peat moss moss is also packaged and sold in a fresh state, and used for lining hanging baskets and air layering.

Sphagnum peat moss is a genus of mosses commonly called peat moss due to its prevalence in peat bogs. Members of this genus can hold large quantities of water inside their cells; some species can hold up to 20 times their dry weight in water, which is why peat moss is commonly sold as a soil amendment.

Sphagnum peat moss, commonly known as bog moss, is the only true moss that has yet proved itself to be of appreciable economic value.

Sphagnum peat moss is found in wet and boggy spots, preferably on peat soil, mostly near heather, on all our mountains and moors, in patches small or large, usually in water free from lime, growing so close together that it often forms large cushions or clumps. It is seldom found in woods; it grows best on heath moors, in water holes.

Sphagnum peat moss should not be confused with sphagnum moss. Sphagnum moss and sphagnum peat moss are not the same product. Sphagnum moss is used in the floral industry to line wire baskets and make wreaths. It is the living moss that grows on top of a sphagnum bog. Sphagnum peat moss is used as a soil conditioner by gardeners. It is the dead material that accumulates in the lower levels of a sphagnum bog.

The peat extracted by the "Record" Ltd. in the Rovno region, Ukraine, is also referred to as the high-moor peat, which is widely used for enrichment of soil, in greenhouse facilities, for growing of champignons, sprouts, ornamental plants. It is recommended for utilization in agriculture and farming without limits for preparation of peat composts, peat mixtures.
